BERSIH: Malik, Khairy, Nazri in Aljazeera Forum

Malaysiakini has many news, letters and articles on BERSIH rally. To top it off, Aljazeera had just organised a forum to discuss related issues pertaining to the biggest Malaysian rally of this decade.

Speakers comprised Human Rights Lawyer, Malik Imtiaz Sarwar of the blog Disquiet, Deputy UMNO Youth Leader, Son-In-Law of the Prime Minister, Khairy Jamaluddin and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Nazri Aziz attended. It was chaired by award winning journalist, Teymoor Nabili .

AlJazeera English - 101 East (part 1 of 2)

AlJazeera English - 101 East (part 2 of 2)

Key points to take note:
1) Khairy said "The Prime Minister had said during the current UMNO General Assembly that in the near future media can regulate themselves".

[Sagaladoola: Yes, Khairy said that in the forum. My question is, can anybody confirm whether the Prime Minister REALLY said that? Get what I mean?

I have Questions, Is it true that the Media is not allowed to regulate themselves now? Hmmnnnn, then who is regulating the Media now? Dear me, I shouldn't have asked that.]

2) Khairy said Election commissions are doing changes all the time, therefore that shows the government listens to the people but Malik thinks the Saturday rally symbolised Civil Societies wanting an Institutional Reform for the eletions. Teymoor asked whether there is any validity that Election commissions have made those changes.

[Sagaladoola: Very interesting answer indeed. Watch that in Part 4. Do not want to create spoilers]

3) Teymoor took out New Sunday Times and exclaimed: “In the largest protest march in Malaysia in a decade, the local papers were silent on the front pages and wrote about the traffic jams in page 4! “ Of which, Nazri said "Media is free to report anything" when questioned about the local media response on the BERSIH rally.

[Sagaladoola: Oh really, Nazri? I let the viewers judge. Fishy, really fishy. Speechless]

4) Nazri said "What's the point when you can call 50,000 (persons) but i can call 1 Million, does that show that I am right?"

5) Nazri said there should not be any Institutional Reform for this issue.

6) Khairy claimed BERSIH is an opposition initiative proven by these leaders sending the memorandum to Yang Di-Pertuan Agong.

7) Malik replied that this is not an Opposition Initiative but a Civil Society Initiative. Opposition parties can be a part of Civil Society. UMNO can join BERSIH, a Civil Society if they want to.

[Sagaladoola: Finally someone said it. I have mentioned it earlier in my post The Yellow Wave: How Come Opposition-Led? I asked, "why didn't UMNO support BERSIH electoral reform rally?" Why? UMNO, BN, why? Why didn't you join? There should be nothing to be afraid of. Or... Have I missed out something? I admit that I am a stupid person for asking this question]

8) Take note on Teymoor's questions on "permits for gathering". Excellent , really excellent and I do not mean the answers from certain people in the forum.

Hehe. Bro, when is that future? 2057 ka?

Sagaladoola said...

It seems everything is geared towards 2057 now. Hmmn, maybe also. Anyway I don't think it will be 2020 . I cannot see that vision. It is not THE trendy word now. Hehehe...

Wonder how many other things that cannot "regulate" themselves now. Scary... Indeed, after this remark from that Somebody, the more and more I feel I did the right thing by supporting BERSIH. People need to make sure the Election Commission can "regulate" itself ... Hehehe... darn.right...

:-)

KJ managed to score a point when he pointed out that the rally is opposition led. Even on the day itself, it was posted that the rally waited for Anwar Ibrahim to hand over the memorandum to the Agong's representative.

If it was only Nazri and Zam out there, it would really have be fun.

Its a pity somebody so promising like KJ has turned to the UMNO-side.

Btw, I wonder whether KJ gave Nazri a whacking after the forum for being such a clown on air. KJ's busier cleaning after Nazri to do anything else.

Dear All,
Any way the questions were asked, the responses from Khairy & Nazri were always precasted out from old ovens. No new issues were built consequent to what discussion leads.
And talk about Glokal.... poodah.

Logic (?) of Politician & Government official?
================================
1. Protest was "illegal" but allowed to show democracy while appealing to Agong. But gathering has to be dispersed!
2. March greeted by Water cannons with chemicals and Teargas at Masjid Jamek while those around Istana was given escort.
3. Teargas and Water Cannons with Chemicals were NOT FORCE!
4. Police were prepared for riot so they used Water Cannons with Chemicals and Teargas in the March (even without riot!).
5. Information Minister has to refer to newspaper for all the information when medias are regulated.
6. Traffic Jam because of Police's blocks due to Protest. So, Protest was the cause of the Traffic Jam.
7. Medias spot nothing on Istana.
8. A lot of changes so the Voice in the March need not!
9. Constitution need no change as Government and the Minsters are elected by the People. So, they are representing People!!
10. Institutional reform no need as the institution being well for the last 50 years and no unfair should be mentioned!
11. Information are regulated and will be self-regulated even information now is much under informed!

FAIR IS THE TOPIC
INTERVIEW WITH NO PANIC
IF TALKS ARE BACK-UP WITH CREDITS
AND REALISTIC!

WISDOM STANDS ALL WAVES
BUT TUMBLING WHEN TRUTH NOT CONVEYED
OR BETRAYED!

After all the rounds
it was a merry-go-round
to say the government have no ground!
Hopefully rules & regulations around
with Laws & Constitutions rebound!!

Hello Sangadola,

I wait to see Minister Nazri call one million people to walk under the rain like Saturday.

BUT those 1 million must come voluntarily (read:no bribery or initiative offered).

And no no no... I am not insinuating that anyone is a corrupt. Just a thought.

What do you think?

Do you think so?

COMMENT:
Hahaha, well by that time we may not see any water cannons or tear gas you know, police may help them block the road so that they can walk, everybody can wear yellow or red or whatever. No one will be beaten or asked to disperse ...

It may be so much different than the BERSIH rally, you know. You get what I mean?

Hahahaha...

COMMENT:
As what I have said earlier here :
The Yellow Wave: How Come Opposition-Led?

It is a CIVIL SOCIETY INITIATIVE. Opposition Parties can be part of a Civil Society. So does the Ruling Party.

All forms of political parties can fight for CIVIL RIGHTS in a democratic society.

My repeat question: Why didn't UMNO lead the rally? What is wrong to support for Electoral Reform for the best of the nation?

Nope, Khairy did not score a point there.

Well, that also depends...

You know when we go shopping, there is such a thing with very small font called...

"TERMS and CONDITIONS apply"

And I am not talking about the common ones applied in Genuine Democratic countries like Japan and Hong Kong...

Get? *wink wink, wink wink*

Wink again *wink wink wink*

WE HEARD??
=========
If they had a heart
they know Democracy was surpassed
Fairness was threaded apart.
No Rally will be hurt
but all Rights be heard
instead of taking Voice as dirt!

The Rally had gone through
not because 40,000 or 50,000 is true
but they had to let a Royal through.
This helped to stop further blues!

Marlik in the show
a clear sign of Human Rights.
The Son-In-Law to speak of Politics?
The minister to speak of info and juridic?
They thought they can make magic
when video gave more than statistic!

They thought they were to debate
but they forgot they were to confess!

THE RALLY NOT HEARD
BY POWERS IN THE HERD
BUT HOPEFULLY HEARD
BY THOSE TO ELECT
TO FIND THOSE WHO CARE AND CAN LEAD
SO SHADE ALL OF YOU FROM RAIN & SHINE
AND FORGET THE CANNONS AND TEARGAS!!

A TRANSPLANT IS NEEDED
BEFORE ALL WILL BE HEARD!
TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT HEARTS
WITH A CAREFUL HEART!!
TIME TO THINK HARD
ONLY AN INDEPENDENT EC COULD START!!

Who is Khairy Jamaluddin anyway?

Why was he there, after all he is only the UMNO ‘Youth’ second man?

Why was he speaking on behalf of the Government of Malaysia?

The G of M is not supposed to be an UMNO ‘Youth’ government.

Now has shown his true colours and exposed himself as the puppet master.

He speaks the Queen’s English, but speaking with a forked tongue is lies no matter how eloquently it is said.

Nazi Aziz is not worth any comment.

Al-Jazeera 101 East on 15.11.2007 clearly showed the entire world the two faces Malaysia, a country where oppression, suppression of human rights and draconian laws are alive and well.

Many thanks Al-Jazeerah.

Malik Imtiaz should take the place of Nazri. The issue of Human rights and the law are too sacrosanct to be lorded over by someone who used to hand out taxi permits.

Just a thought here—why 2 govt reps vs 1 people's rep? Knowing Nazri's reputation for firing unhinged, unthinking diatribes, were the govt afraid of a repeat of the Maidin—Jazeera fiasco?

The show was on two sides!

Close your eyes!
and look at Malik
with an eye
and then both eyes!

Close your eyes
and look at the other side
with an eye
and then both eyes!

What have you got?

1 vs 2 - the Aljazeera's wisdoms on the spot!
One already hint here - the 14th's note!
Similarly for The Makcik and The Hunk
where "LuLu" had hung
together with what the Police hunt!

Wisdoms are many where
IF they are there
when people care!!

So, IslahIman,
Thanks your returned note!
To say you care!

Is fatal talking sense into Nazri. KJ still got help.

AS for Nazri, you basically have to show power. He only respects power and power only. Nothing else.

If you don't have it, then talking to the wall is a better alternative.

what an idiot Nazri. He thinks we are stupid.can't handle himslef or the questions well, some more lawyer.

KJ did well overall.
